Special Belgian Mare arrives HomeThis is a very special mare... Victoria did not pick her.. she picked Victoria. As she stood in the aisle before the auction, looking at the horses, she felt something on the top of her head... it was this beautiful big belgian mare... as if to say.. "Hey .. remember me please" and Victoria did. The wonderful girl is now home and will spend the rest of her days as part of a very special herd.
Even better news, HaySeuss now has a VERY BIG SISTER.... and he is a very happy donkey. He could not stand high enough to get a glimpse of his new big sister and of course seeing his Mom... who reminded Hayseuss after everything was settled, that he is still her very special little boy and always will be. There is something very special when you watch HaySeuss see his Mom coming...he loves her so much.
No need to worry about security here. Both HaySeuss and Miss Belgian Mare have their own Guard Geese who watch over them and do not allow anyone too close.

Behind the scenes with Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue's Latest Amazing Rescue and Victoria McCullough
Written by: PhelpsSports ®.com. Client: Phelps Media Group, Inc. Release Date: 2008-06-04 By Kitson Jazynka For PhelpsSports.com
My friends at Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue in Loxahatchee, FL have done it again: saved the lives of an incredible number of serviceable horses that would otherwise have had to endure a torturous journey across U.S. borders to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. These are not just words on a page. Really. If not for the work of Pure Thoughts, their supporters and, in this case, their angelic sponsor and fellow horse lover, Victoria McCullough, by now, these 163 perfectly good horses would have suffered painful cuts and broken bones on the deadly trailer ride which would have delivered them to a horrific death.
Instead, over Memorial Day weekend, Pure Thoughts co-founder Jennifer Swanson and Victoria outbid surly kill buyers for hours on Friday night at a horse auction in Sugar Creek, OH. They bought every horse there (click here to read the press release).
Victoria, an amateur jumper rider who has a farm in Wellington and owns the midatlantic-based company Chesapeake Petroleum, not only spent $70,000 over the weekend to rescue all 163 horses, but she has rallied members of the elite Wellington horse crowd to support efforts of Pure Thoughts – by donating money and stalls, and offers to host adoption events and adopt horses. With phone calls to all of her friends and her friends’ friends in the 561 area code, and up and down the east coast, Victoria has turned the subject of horse rescue into Wellington’s most fashionable cause.
“It was an amazing contrast for me, but one that has changed my life,” said Victoria about her connection with Pure Thoughts. “One minute I was horse shopping in Germany, and a week later I’m at a kill auction saving horses’ lives. When I found out about Pure Thoughts and visited unannounced, then researched the whole situation with horse slaughter, I was appalled. I previously thought only old and infirmed horses went to slaughter. At this point, I’ve learned a whole new way of thinking of what my money can do.”
“I have bought wonderful things for myself during my life,” continued McCullough, “but providing funds for the rescue of these horses is truly the best purchase I’ve ever made. If every one of us can open a stall door to a horse in need, there wouldn't be horses at auction facing a painful death. No horse should have an end like that.”
I found out about all this about 24 hours after it happened. In my backyard in Washington, DC, I was tending to a birthday party with 24 kids in a moon bounce. At one point I snuck inside for a moment of peace and was delighted to see a call coming in from Brad Gaver, the other co-founder of Pure Thoughts. I love kids, but a call from Brad meant horse talk. I was all ears.
Brad was calling on his way to Ohio to help Jennifer, Victoria and their crew of supporters and friends tend to the large group of gorgeous paints, thoroughbreds, quarter horses, ponies and draft horses (oh, and there is a family of blonde donkeys including a newborn foal who, had she not been bought that night, would have been born in a cramped, awful trailer on her way to slaughter).
It was so great to hear good news about their tireless and selfless rescue efforts. I was struck by the excitement in Brad’s voice. The last time I saw him, in March, he seemed down. I wondered if the hardships of horse rescue had become overwhelming. The $75 for a 12-ounce jar of prescription ointment for a dying horse. Never enough money. Four horses on site with serious medical needs, tended to around the clock by Jennifer and Brad. Foals that needed costly milk replacer every two hours around the clock. Daily chores for 40 horses on their ranch accomplished with some dedicated volunteers but no funds for hired hands. Watching expensive hay blowing “like dollar bills in the wind,” he remarked, weary. Staying up until midnight waiting for horses to arrive, knowing there weren’t enough stalls. No time for dinner, too rushed for breakfast. Things are tough for those in the business of horse rescue.
But on this day, Brad sounded elated. We agreed to talk again after he arrived in Ohio. At 11:30 p.m. the moon bounce had been deflated. My lasts guests departed. I knew Brad, Jennifer and Victoria would be heading to their hotel in Ohio. I put my wilted five-year old birthday boy to bed and picked up the phone and listened to the amazing story.
“We just held up our signs the entire night,” said Jennifer, “and bought every horse that came through. It got very tense and the meat buyers were getting very angry. With the price of gas, to take home an empty trailer is bad news for them. The auctioneer figured out what we were doing and he was a real gentleman. He said he admired us and got the kill buyers to shut up.”
Victoria explained how as the night wore on, the situation became more and more aggravated but she and Jennifer maintained their composure and calmly, politely outbid the meat buyers. Afterwards, grateful horses were moved in three shipments to a nearby farm where they could relax in pastures fully of shady trees and delicious spring grass.
“It’s an amazing experience to stand in the quiet of these horses and listen to them breathe, and know they are so thankful to be alive,” said Jennifer.
“It’s an incredible group of totally serviceable horses. We’ve had them checked out by an amazing vet from Ohio State, Dr. John Bryk of Mapleton Vet Clinic and the great news is that not one of them has to be put down,” said Jennifer.
As of Tuesday evening, half of the rescued horses were already on their way down to Florida. Some were already there. All of the horses will go through a process of being evaluated, rehabilitated, loved and paired with adoptive homes. And supporters of the group have rallied horse people all over the east coast for support and even more urgently – for stalls. While Brad and Jennifer remained in Ohio through Wednesday the 4th overseeing the loading of the horses, Victoria had returned to Wellington to ready all of the stalls and barns where the horses will be stabled.
“People are calling everyday to help and I am overwhelmed by the generosity,” said McCullough. “My friend Isaac Arrguetty has graciously given us use of his Mida Farm for about 40 of the incoming horses. Because of his kindness, these horses will have a wonderful reversal of fortune.”
Wednesday morning I talked to Victoria and she was thrilled to report that Joe Norrick, a California horse person who has facilities in Wellington, had donated the use of two back-to-back barns with more than 40 stalls. She also mentioned that and Dr. Rob Boswell from Palm Beach Equine and his wife Lisa have been terrific in spreading the word around the horse community.
Victoria is also championing a program to facilitate adoptions from Pure Thoughts to intercollegiate college riding programs. She is also spearheading a plan to create a unified global collaboration to help stop the slaughter of horses with help from the International League for the Protection of Horses.
“It is time for the voice of the people to be heard and put an end to horse slaughter,” said Swanson. “For years others have tried to suppress anti-horse slaughter legislation HR 503 and S311, incorrectly believing horse slaughter is over is a myth. Horses are now being transported INHUMANELY to Mexico and Canada, where the cruelty is beyond comprehension. We have laws in our country regarding humane treatment of animals. Why are we not adhering to them for the horses?"
For a long time, Wellington resident Richard Schechter, CEO of The Bainbridge Companies, LLC and owner of Bainbridge Farms has been a primary sponsor of Pure Thoughts’ work. “I’m extremely focused on doing anything I can to eliminate the slaughter of horses,” Richard told me over the phone on Tuesday afternoon. “I’m trying to work on it on a national level and doing whatever I can to help pass legislation that would prevent the export of horses for slaughter. Until we’ve accomplished that, anything that we can do to rescue these horses so they don’t end up going to slaughter is critically important.”
“The nice thing about Pure Thoughts and what they’re doing is that you can see the results,” he continued. “They work very hard. It’s a huge effort. Their dedication and the results they have achieved speak for themselves. We’ve rescued hundreds and hundreds of horses.”
“This world is far from perfect,” said McCullough, “but we can all make a difference. This experience has taught me to appreciate my own horses and how lucky they are. I had no idea who unbelievably cruel the other side is,” said McCullough.

UPDATE The horses are getting settled into Florida very nicely. Every day for us is like waking to a dream. I have to pinch myself to remind myself.. this is real...it did happen.. and they are here. They days are long, hot and tiresome but when we are done feeding the last barn and we stop & listen.. t my favorite sound.. horses peacefully chewing, I cannot wait for the sun to shine on tomorrow and be able to see all these beautiful faces again. The Belgian mare who was covered in wounds all over her left side, infected stitches above her eye and very thin is stabilizing and doing well. The Belgian mare who was very skinny and blind in one eye is gaining weight and doing very well. The Saddlebred who was bone thin and had an injured eye is doing very well and had about 3 inches taken off his feet. The Halflingers who had abcesses in their feet are doing better. The partially blind (he has not been checked to see how blind he is) white gelding is doing well. He definitely sees shadows, does much better in the daytime than night. The Stdbd mare with the horrible would that was brought in after the auction is doing great and may make a full recovery. Some of the horses were left in Ohio at the hospital. Those that were either not able to travel or had snotty noses. The old donkey of the donkey family passed away at the doctor's office. He had a respiratory infection which he has had for a while. His lungs filled up with fluids three times and they drained it but it was too much on him and he passed. He was very aged and between life and the auction it was just too much for him. The old skinny mare that was brought into auction by the Sheriff's office had to be put down. She was very skinny and loaded with worms which could have maybe been handled and the doctor started to but she also had ulcers. She was in a stall and one day he thought she was sweating so he went in there and he found that she had ulcers all over her body that just started coming out. She was put to sleep that day. The Arab mare which was rode through "supposedly" sound. This woman was riding this mare with her child which was about 3 years. After the auctioneer read what the woman had wrote about this mare being sound. Roy Baker said, this mare is far from sound and this is total misrepresentation. Baker yelled at her to get that baby off that horse before she gets killed. That night Camille was doctoring her in the stall because once we got her in a stall after the auction we found out that her halter was completely embedded into her jaw. Saturday she was transported to the facility in Ohio. We put her in the infirmary. On Sunday she was barely able to walk. The halter embedded into her jaw was the least of her problems. Not only was she unable to walk but she was mean and pinned her ears back and would not let anyone touch her with was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of her demeanor at the auction. She went to the doctors and we found out why. This poor mare was 20 plus years old.. that was the only correct information. This poor thing was severely foundered in all four feet in addition to the embedded halter. They had her on Bute and Banamine for months so that they could still ride her. Her stomach was completely ulcerated. It was a matter of what ailment could be fought first. She was on gastroguard in hopes the ulcers would clear and the founder could be dealt with but it was just too late for this sweet girl. She was laid to rest. There is one still in serious condition, he was husband of the husband and wife Shire cross pair. He is in desperate need of prayers Now for some good news to make you smile. WE HAD ANOTHER BABY!! The black and white paint mare who we kept at the doctor's office because we felt she was too close to travel had her baby. He is a charcoal gray (will probably be black) colt with a big blaze and LONG legs. 40 of the horses have been cleared from the sick pen and are in the healthy pen. They have had their feet trimmed, vaccinated and teeth done (those who needed.) 6 of the Stallions have been gelded. All the mares are being given an ultrasound. There have been 7 mares that were less that 40 days pregnant and their pregnancy has been terminated. This is something we have not done before but we think we will start making it part of our procedures. When these horses are brought to auction, for the most part they are all thrown together and who knows what happened before they arrived. I know this may be controversial with the "pro-life" type of issues. Our feeling is that one of the largest problems in the Equine world is irresponsible breeding. This not a procedure that is hard on the mare. I will go into more detail regarding it tomorrow (want to get this update done tonight). The fact is it is less risk for the mare rather than carrying the baby and we think it is a sensible way to try and cut down on the irresponsible breeding. We have enough pregnant mares that are far enough along if someone wants to adopt a pregnant mare. This way when we adopt a horse out we can guarantee that she is not pregnant. All the horses will be not only medically evaluated before they leave but they will have their feet trimmed, teeth checked (floated if need be) and vaccinated. Tomorrow is going to be very busy so on Tuesday we should be able to get started with the names from the "Name Game" and pictures. Thank you TEAM HORSE... This is a big undertaking but we are showing pro-slaughter advocates that... IT CAN BE DONE!! No Unwanted Horses in Wellington!
Written by: Phelps Media Group, Inc. Client: Phelps Media Group, Inc. Release Date: 2008-06-09 Equestrian Community in South Florida Rallies Around Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue as a united team
Following Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue's record-breaking rescue of 163 horses from a horse auction in Ohio, the horse community in Wellington, FL - from international polo players to Olympic show jumpers and dressage riders to trail riders - has rallied to form a unified effort to say we will not tolerate the abuse and torture of horses.
Last week, a group of Florida farriers demonstrated their support in sweat and labor after a plea from Pure Thoughts supporter and volunteer Mandy Winkler. As a result of Mindy's call, a large group of some of the best farriers in South Florida showed up ready to file, rasp, and cinch their way through more than 50 horses. Despite high temperatures and unbearable humidity, the group of farriers, including Phillip Breault, Andrew Vaziri, Sid Bundy, Todd Monahan, Terry Ott and Paul Mitchell Young, treated each of these horses and ponies as if they were grand champions. You can see the photos on www.PTHR.org
Pure Thoughts is extremely grateful to the work of the farriers who helped the horses last week. You have helped us show the world that each one of these horses is wanted.
"This is a horse loving community," said Wellington resident, equestrian, and Pure Thoughts supporter Victoria McCullough. "The hope in my heart that we had before rescuing all these horses is becoming a reality. This is an equestrian community in a horse nation and our community is rallying to help."
"This community has shown the country they we are all part of a team and we are defined by our actions in saving these horses," say Pure Thoughts co-founder Jennifer Swanson. "What started as our second annual rescue mission has turned into a message made loud and clear throughout the nation. We ARE here for the horses and we are NOT leaving. We do care and we will not tolerate the abuse and torture of these beautiful animals that have devoted their lives to our livelihood, entertainment, athletic competition, companionship and unconditional love."
"We have a message to kill buyers, pro-slaughter advocates and our legislators," said Swanson. "We will change horse slaughter and the gross inhumane treatment of these animals that starts at auction and the irresponsible and/or uncaring individuals that brought these horses there."
You have the power to help Pure Thoughts stop horse slaughter and the inhumane treatment involved. This rescue mission is an enormous undertaking and will be a long road. There are many ways you can help the horses on this journey. Even if you can't adopt a horse, there are many ways to help such as:

This is not a mission that can be done by one person or even one organization. It takes a team, and you can be a member of this team: TEAM HORSE.

Pure Thoughts is an all volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of horses, yearlings and foals that were bound for the foreign owned slaughterhouses in our country. These horses would have been brutally tortured and slaughtered so that they could be served as a delicacy in foreign countries. In addition we also rescue horses from starvation, abuse and neglect, any horse in need. We have saved over 975 innocent equines and as long as these cruel acts continue we will continue to fight for the horses. We cannot do this alone...we need your help!! Please help us and others save these beautiful animals and please remember in your thoughts the ones we were unable to reach. www.PTHR.org UPDATE - June 10th Here are some pictures of Victoria's special girl and the Momma Donk & Baby. Update from doctor in Ohio Everyone has now been trimmed, wormed and vaccinated. All mares have been checked for pregnancy. All stallions except the sick one have been gelded. One horse that had a laceration in the chest has been treated. The laceration was old and never treated so he had to cut it out and then sewn back together. There were two horses that had abcesses from precious injuries and those have been treated. One he said looked as if the horse had been clubbed in the head. The husband/wife Shire pair still need prayers. The wife is doing better and coming out of it but the husband is still critical. He is has been switched to Naxcel because the Gentocin and Penicillin can get damaging on his liver. Please say prayers for both of them. There was a necropsy done on the Donkey, his lungs were shredded and puss pockets all over them which is a sign of years of respiratory problems that have gone untreated. The stalls are filled with the horses being treated. Momma and new baby are doing well. The paint horse that was having so much trouble is doing better. He was on Steroids, Lasix and antibiotics but what they have now found out is some of the problem with this horse is that he has major allergies so this boy will probably need to be on antihistamines all his life. That is why he was breaking out in hives. Update from Florida The big Belgian has regained much strength and is now standing on his own. We do not know yet what will be the answer for him. He has a ways to go before we can think of addressing the other issues. Brad will be leaving early in the morning to pick up some horses from Apopka. Everyone here is doing pretty well as far as the horses, the humans are exhausted all the way around. I cannot tell you how amazed I am everyday at the people who are stepping forward to help with this rescue mission. Whether they are volunteers who help mucking the paddocks and stalls or knowledgeable horse people who are wrapping legs and tending to the horses. It is magical. We have not begin the name game yet I am sorry but it has been quite a feat just getting everyone settled and on a regimen and now everything seems to be running very smooth. I did get some pictures and I will upload them tonight. Two horses have been approved for adoption. Number 422 which is a very sweet TB mare and a Big Belgian Mare who we think was a PMU Mare because she has an 80 freezebranded on her left hind quarter. I do not know which day this will happen but Victoria is going to have all the horse's blessed. This is something that many people do down here. In the past we have always taken our dogs to Palm Beach to have them blessed and I think this is very special to do for the horses. With all they have been through I think they deserve this special consideration. I cannot explain enough the camaraderie there is down here right now, I know I keep using the word magical but it is just something I have never witnessed. There are people who I have known for a week and it feels like we have been friends all our lives. I guess the horses really are a glue that binds people. Security is very high in the various barns. All volunteers who have been approved will have to start wearing a wristbands tomorrow so that we know they are approved to be at the farms. We are taking every preventative measure to insure the safety of these wonderful beings. They are no longer "the herd' they are all starting to show their individual personalities and the first to come out of their shells are the Belgians. You would think they have lived in this fancy barn with a cushy life all their lives. They have adjusted well!! LOL. Today we were speaking about graining and who to grain and who to mash at the various barns. Victory said, oh don;t even think about not graining the Belgians, they will raise such a raucous. What I think is so funny is that none of these Belgian knew what a cookie was when they came in ... now they have started to turn up their noses to carrots and only want cookies.. Took a raise of hooves for the favorite barn cookie ... Mrs. Pasture's won HOOVES DOWN!! There is a woman who has jumped in with both feet and I know both Victoria and myself are forever grateful to her. She is volunteering all her time and expertise and there is no way this would be happening the way it is without her help. Her name is Mandy and I would sure like it is we could show her just how appreciative we all are.. everyone from all over the country... If you could send her a card or drop her a note I will get them to her. Her name is Mandy and you can send it here c/o Pure Thoughts, 19181 Capet Creek, Loxahatchee, FL 33470. I would just love for her to see just how large TEAM HORSE is and how much we all care. Thanks everyone.. Promise more pictures tomorrow!! Much love from all the horses at Pure Thoughts to all of you! Jen |

Update Miracle Save June 15th The horses that are in Ohio are all doing well except for our one Shire cross who is the husband of the Shire team. He still needs many thoughts and prayers and I am saddened to say ... he needs a miracle. We may have to make the decision at some point in the near future. Someone else will have to make this decision. I will have to leave it up to Victoria and Brad this time. I have been good about these decisions up until now but this boy has such a special place in my heart and I cannot make this one. The wife loves him so much and he was so sweet taking care of her when they were in Ohio. I remember sitting on the side of the arena the first time he would come up and take treats from my hand. I had spent days trying to get him to earn my trust just sitting and standing by him and waiting for him to decide I was OK. The first time he would finally sniff me and then take the treat I had a smile from ear to ear. It was another bright spot in a horrible time. I wanted to jump up and hug him but I knew that would scare the dickens out of him. After he took the treat, the wife was just like 6 inches behind him and he looked over at her and nickered as if to say "It's OK, they are nice people and the treats are good." Then she stepped up and cautiously took one to. After that she let me do whatever she wanted. The day they loaded to doctor's he loaded but she would not. I was not there I was in the barn and they left without her. She was so depressed when the trailer came back she would not load. That night she was very despondent. I put a halter on her and took her out and fed her by myself and just hung out with her, she nuzzled with me until I had to finally leave it was so late. The next day they brought the husband back and then she would load on the trailer. I just do not have the strength to make this decision. Florida Everyone is doing well and we have had a chance to start evaluating the horses. The maternity ward is color color color.. three paints that are all pregnant and of course the dutiful Red Dun gelding that faithfully watches over his mare. We think the first to give birth will be the bay paint, she seems to be anywhere from a week to a month away.. LOL.. I am usually good at this but she has me baffled. I would say the other two are over a month away. Belgian number 80 on her bum went home, I am not sure if I already posted about that but she is doing very well and her new family is very happy. A perfect match Two more have been adopted but have not gone home yet. They are a handsome Bay Gelding TB, who has hip number 423. I will take pictures tomorrow because I have to start getting pictures of all of the TB's to pull there tattoos... And one of the all time favorites to Carol ... the Chestnut Gelding TB who just loves his treats and tells you so by nodding his head. They will be going together with an amazing family. We are so happy. They now have their forever family. Lovely people who are friends of Victoria came out to see the horses and what we were doing.. they fell in love. The Blind Belgian Mare and her friend will also be going to their forever home. A wonderful woman named Michelle who is a friend of Victoria has opened her heart and her beautiful home to these two. The one Belgian is so beautiful and he takes such good care of the blind in one eye Belgian mare who is soon to be as stunning on the outside as she is on the inside. She will also be taking one of the Halflingers that is a little off in his feet but we think that is just an abscess. The past few days Michelle, Paulette and Sabrina have been spending their time taking care of the horses at two of the barns. ... and oh do they look beautiful.. these horses look like show horses ... they are being primped and loved like you cannot believe. Yesterday they "beautified" one of the sorrel paint mares (not the pregnant one) and you can guess what happened.. yes they fell in love again so Michelle will be taking her too. Such lucky lucky horses!!! The life ahead of them will make them forget any pain they once knew. The horses are not leaving yet but they are already part of their forever family. You can see the look in the horses eyes.. It is one of peace and surety. There is no longer any fear. They no they are safe and some of them are even getting demanding which is our favorite thing to see. It is wonderful to see the spirit back in them. Life is good and it is only going to get better. I still am overwhelmed by the people coming out to help the horses, you cannot imagine it and leading the group is Victoria there every single day, all of us doing anything and everything for these horses. It does not matter who you are, the heart is the guide and the hearts are with the horses. Our days are filled with smiles as we watch these horses blossom, yet again into the wonderful animals they once were before life took a horrible turn on them. On a funny note, you do learn to appreciate the smallest of things that life gives us. Last week Brad and I both desperately needed a hair cut, even long before the rescue mission. Well, we did not have time during the day. About 10:30 at night the woman who adopted Simpatico, who is also a hair dresser called us and said. "Well, my last client just left and you can run over now. We both were exhausted and tired but we knew we would not have time during the day so we said "OK." Well, we had been eating soup basically because I have not had time to do any grocery shopping and just as we said that we were hungry we looked down outside of the pantry and saw a can.. WAHOO.. Chefboyardee (sp) with a flip top. We grabbed two forks and ran out to the truck to go get are hair cut with the can of beefaroni in hand...IT WAS A GOOD THING!!! These horses are in some of the most beautiful barns you can imagine but as we always say.. it is not where they live as long as it is safe, it is the love they get by the people who love them that counts. Right now these horses know nothing but love ... and tomorrow always comes for them and this time.. tomorrow brings happiness. |
